St Dominic’s School – Margaret Smith, Head Teacher

I would like to begin by thanking the kind people who have contacted us in regard to the curriculum areas the children are studying as mentioned in my last report. We have received some very interesting pictures of India which have been used to support the Class 3 topic. In a similar vein I would also like to extend thanks to all the staff at ‘The Passage to India’ for providing the children with a variety of food to enhance their Indian experience. In the words of Angus:

‘When we got to Nailsworth (they walked along the cycle track) we were starving and we needed something to eat. Me and my two friends liked the mango chutney and I also liked the chicken korma and rice. It was great fun. We were planning to get the bus back to school but we had to walk, but still it was fun!’

Since my last report we have been heavily involved in fund raising for Haiti. In response to an idea by Samantha in Class 3 it was decided to try and raise money towards the purchase of a Shelter Box as demonstrated by Brian Webster from the Stonehouse Rotary club. Following a non uniform day, cake sale, hats for Haiti, and a film experience the community raised a total of £490 – enough to buy a box. We are now looking forward to tracking the progress of ‘our’ box and hope that it will make a big difference to the lives of some families.

This term has seen the ‘first’ of two new opportunities for our older children. It is the first time that they have taken part in the Stroud Music Festival which will be taking place at the end of March, meaning that they are now in the process of practising hard. The other ‘first’ is our Yr 6 children taking part in the Mock Trial experience held at Stroud Court. Working closely with magistrates the children have been practising the role of the defence in a given scenario and will be ‘acting’ their part against another local school.

Later this term we will also be taking part in the annual Country Dance festival which will hopefully mean that Spring has well and truly arrived!
