Stroud Festival of Nature – Saturday 5th June, Stratford Park, 10am -5pm, free admission
Television nature expert Mike Dilger will be the star attraction at the new-look Stroud Festival of Nature next month. ‘The One Show’ presenter will join thousands of visitors at Stratford Park on Saturday 5th June for a day-long celebration of wildlife and the environment. The free event is one of many BBC Springwatch ‘Wild Days Out’ taking place across the UK this month and is also backed by Stroud District Council.
Previously part of the Stroud Country Show, the Festival of Nature has now grown into a separate event in its own right. For the first time the activities and attractions will be held around the Museum in the Park between 10am and 5pm.
Festival organiser Steve Roberts said; “It will be a great day out with a huge amount of things to see and do. With a new date, a new venue and a new look, it promises to attract people from across the region.”
Activities include llama trekking, bug and amphibian displays, nature trails, nest box building, wildlife photography workshops, pond digging, quizzes, crafts and a drawing competition. Among the exhibitors will be the Museum in the Park, the National Trust, the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Stroud Valleys Project, Westonbirt Arboretum and the Global Bee Project; plus there will be a live broadcast by BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
The Festival of Nature will also help mark Stratford Park’s 75th anniversary. In 1935 what was then Stroud Urban District Council bought the land for the enjoyment of local people. Activities at the event will also be marking the ‘International Year of Biodiversity’ and ‘World Environment Day’.
Stroud District Council’s cabinet member for community services, Councillor Joe Forbes said; “One of the Festival’s main events will be a pond dig in the park and the planting of new reeds in the lake. This will be the first step to restoring habitats and enhancing this multi-award winning open space in its anniversary year.”
Visitors are being invited to bring a picnic and stay for wildlife events in the evening including moth collecting and bat detecting.
